IOM Lima Assists Students and Migrants Travelling Overseas
The IOM Regional Office in Lima, through its Migrants' Assistance
and Support for Students Programme, provides support to vulnerable
migrants, students and other persons travelling abroad.
In the first semester of 2009, IOM assisted 218 students
travelling to Australia and Canada with their travel
arrangements. The IOM office also provided support to
107 migrants who had received labour contracts with employers in
Australia and Canada.
IOM also provided humanitarian assistance to a refugee who
traveled to France.
To meet the needs of many scholarship holders who receive full
or partial funding for their studies, which do not include airfare
costs, IOM works in close collaboration with the National Science
and Technology Council (CONCYTEC) and the National Institute of
Scholarships and Educational Credits (INABEC), to ensure they can
take advantage of the higher education and professional
opportunities. IOM secures up to 50 per cent reduction on
airfares and higher allowances for excess baggage.
IOM also provides assistance with the processing of travel
documents, transportation arrangements, and counseling for
returning migrants, including vulnerable persons, students who have
completed their studies, qualified professionals, retired workers,
and irregular migrants.
