IOM hosts training on collective center management in Dominican Republic
Dominican Republic - On 3-8 November 2013, IOM will facilitate a Training of Trainers in collective centre management in Jarabacoa in the Dominican Republic.
The training will introduce newly developed resources including a toolkit for collective center management and a Sphere Standards on collective centre management video adapted to the Dominican context.
The training will bring together 25 participants from various national risk management institutions including Dominican Civil Defense, Dominican Red Cross, and the Center for Emergency Operations.
Following the training, participants will serve as regional trainers to roll out collective centre management trainings targeting the most vulnerable regions of the country. A minimum of six additional trainings are projected for 2014 that will reach at least 120 key first responders.
The training is part of a UNDP-managed DIPECHO project: “Prepared institutions and communities resilient to earthquakes and tsunamis in urban environments of the province of Puerto Plata” that builds on a previous 2012 DIPECHO project that created the first national roster of collective centre managers and developed the national guidelines on collective centre management (Caja de Herramientas para la Gestión de Albergues – Centros Colectivos en República Dominicana, 2012).
This initiative is supported by the Disaster Preparedness Programme of the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (DIPECHO) and builds on previous activities to strengthen local capacities to effectively coordinate and manage disaster response in the Dominican Republic.
