IOM Haiti's Graphic Cartoon Newspaper Promotes Cholera Prevention

A special edition of Chimen Lakay, IOM Haiti's graphic cartoon
newspaper has been released on the subject of cholera prevention.
The name Chimen Lakay means "The Way Home" in Creole and it is
drawn by the noted Haitian graphic artist Chevelin Pierre.

The manga-style comic is targeted at people of low literacy
levels – illiteracy in Haiti is estimated at more than 50 per
cent – and it tells in words and graphic images the story of
a person who contracts cholera and the reactions of his friends and
family. They receive advice not to panic, they make and administer
homemade oral rehydration solution (ORS) and the patient survives.
There is also advice on calling the authorities to dispose properly
of dead bodies. The newspaper is part of the key messaging campaign
to a population which has not known cholera in its lifetime and is
terrified of contracting it.

The inside pages contain an editorial by IOM communications
staff, a letter which is part of IOM's Voice of the Voiceless
campaign to collect letters from internally displaced persons
(IDPs) across Haiti and a modified flyer on cholera prevention
produced in close coordination with the Government of Haiti.

In response to advance demand for this free newspaper, there
will be an initial print run of 200,000 which is a ten-fold
increase in the normal print run for Chimen Lakay. The paper will
be distributed in the most vulnerable communities of Haiti in
particular in the 1,300 IDP camps starting early next week.

The newspaper is supplemented by an IOM daily live radio show
from IDP camps which is broadcast nationwide. That show is produced
in association with Radio Boukman of Cite Soleil in Port-au-Prince
and syndicated to the RAMAK network of 41 community radio stations.
It is also broadcast over a nationwide radio channel. The 41
community radio stations are in the process of being networked with
the help of a special website SitwayenAyiti.org or CitizenHaiti.org
which will host live broadcasts of the daily radio show and contain
podcasts and blogs on community activities supported by IOM
programmes.
