IOM, Government Trains Nepali Officials in Bilateral Labour Agreements, Migration Management
IOM, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Transport
Management, has organized two training programmes – one on
bilateral labour agreements and one on labour migration management
and development – for Nepali officials in Kathmandu.
A group of 20 participants from the ministries of Labour and
Transport Management, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Women, Children and
Social Welfare, Law and Justice, Home Affairs and the National
Planning Commission took part in the bilateral labour agreement
training, which was opened by the Secretary of the Ministry of
Labour and Transport Management.
The 1.5 day programme was designed to familiarize technical
level participants with bilateral labour agreements and build their
capacity to negotiate agreements that protect the rights of Nepali
migrant workers abroad.
The second 1.5 day programme on labour migration management and
development was attended by 14 policy level officials from the same
departments and the Central Bank of Nepal.
The training, which was facilitated by IOM officials from Geneva
and Bangkok, highlighted the importance of remittances and
effective engagement of diasporas to maximize the benefits of
labour migration for development.
