IOM, Government of Chad and Civil Society Join Efforts to Build National Capacities in Countering Child Trafficking
In the framework of a project funded by the United States
Department of State's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in
Persons (GTIP), IOM Chad with the technical support from the IOM
Regional Office for West and Central Africa has jointly organized
with the Ministries of Social Affairs; Human Rights; Justice;
and Public Security and Immigration and partners from civil society
four-day training on identifying and assisting trafficked victims
including referral of the trafficked system.
The major objective of the training is to build the capacity of
civil society and law enforcement officials to jointly and
effectively identify and protect victims of internal child
trafficking.
Fifty participants have successfully participated in the
training that ended on 9th December 2011. The closing
ceremony was attended by the Minister of Social Action, H. E. Ms.
Fatime Issa Ramadane; the Minister of Human Rights, H.E. Ms. Amina
Dodjiyana; the US Ambassador to Chad, H.E. Mr. Marc Boulware, and
other high-ranking government officials and Diplomatic Missions in
Chad.
In the the on-going counter-trafficking project, IOM will
provide direct assistance to child victims of trafficking in the
country. Internal child trafficking in Chad is a common phenomenon
that is touching the main urban centers, i.e., N’Djamena and
Abeche, as areas of destination for children exploited as domestic
workers.
The event was widely covered by the national media including
national TV, radio and newspapers.
