IOM Exhibit Opens in UN Pavilion at Korean World Expo 2012

An IOM exhibit will open on Sunday May 27th in the UN pavilion at
the World Expo 2012 in Yeosu on the southern coast of the Republic
of Korea. The Expo, whose theme this year is The Living Ocean and
Coast, is expected to attract some 10 million visitors.

The IOM exhibit, which will run from May 27th to June 9th, will
focus on the situation of coastal and small-island populations and
how they cope with climate change and environmental
degradation.

It will show how rural inhabitants of low-lying land, urban
migrants living in coastal cities and small island developing
nations are developing strategies to increase their own resilience
and what national governments and the international community can
do to help them.

Low-lying coastal area populations are particularly vulnerable
to environmental change due to coastal ecosystem degradation, the
rise in sea levels and increased frequency of tropical
storms.  About two thirds of all cities with over 5 million
inhabitants lie in such coastal areas.

IOM believes that orderly migration should be factored into
disaster risk reduction schemes in cities and for coastal
populations. The already on-going forms of circular migration to
and from coastal areas should be supported in order to raise the
resilience of coastal inhabitants under climate
stress.
