IOM Emergency Response to Expelled Chadian Migrants from Libya

On July 2nd 2012, 707 Chadian migrants were expelled from Libya by the Libyan authorities.

The Chadian migrants were brought from different cities in Libya to the southern Libyan city of Gatroun before they were sent home in 10 trucks. Others migrants decided to return home following the ethnic clashes in southern Libya.

During their arduous journey to the Chadian border, two migrants died of unknown causes. Additionally, a truck carrying around 60 migrants broke down in the Chadian desert, leaving the migrants under extremely difficult conditions. Two other migrants died upon their arrival in the district hospital of Faya. All migrants were men and without any luggage. Most of the migrants were from the cities of Goz-Beida, Abeche in the East, Mao in the West and N’Djamena, the capital of Chad.

Upon the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and African Integration of the Republic of Chad, IOM immediately mobilized its operations, medical and psychosocial team to Faya (Borkou Region) to provide the very much needed humanitarian assistance to the expelled migrants.

The humanitarian assistance consisted of registration and profiling, and the provision of:

  • Basic shelter (setting up of a transit centre);
  • Food items;
  • Non-food items (NFIs);
  • Medical care,
  • Psychosocial support; and
  • Transportation to their places of origin.

Moreover, IOM together with the Chadian Authorities sent an ambulance to rescue the sick and vulnerable migrants on board of the broken truck in the Chadian desert.
