IOM Emergency Fund Gets Boost from Turkey, Bahamas

Turkey has contributed USD 200,000 to IOM's newly-established
Migration Emergency Funding Mechanism (MEFM).

The contribution was communicated to IOM by the Turkish
Permanent Mission in Geneva and is the second such contribution to
the fund, following an earlier contribution of USD 2.5 million by
the United States.

Turkey and the Bahamas, which also made a contribution to the
fund, were among the 146 IOM Member States who voted in favour of
setting up of the mechanism at the IOM Council in December
2011.

Its aim is to reinforce IOM's operational and emergency response
capacity by bridging the gap between the period when an emergency
occurs and when donor funding is received, which can often be the
difference between life and death for affected populations.

The fund will be primarily used to cover the cost of
international transport for migrants affected by emergencies. It
will also cover any arrangements in the place of origin, departure,
transit or arrival to prepare for or support their travel,
including any necessary transport to the international departure
point and other related out-of-pocket costs, as well as associated
staff and office costs. It is intended to maintain a balance of USD
30 million.
