IOM Distributes Emergency Kits to Families Displaced by Conflict in Somalia
Somalia - IOM Somalia has distributed emergency kits containing mosquito nets, plastic sheets, blankets, sleeping mats and hygiene packs to 100 vulnerable, conflict-displaced families in Galkayo, Somalia. The distribution was funded by the Government of Japan.
“We conducted a rapid assessment, in collaboration with other humanitarian agencies, to identify the most pressing needs of families who fled the ongoing fighting,” said Dr. Chaiki Ito, who heads IOM Somalia’s preparedness and response division.
Halima Mohamed Osman, who received an emergency kit, said: “We had no shelter and have been sleeping without blankets. When we fled from the frontline to save our lives, we left everything behind. Some of our property was burnt down. These kits will protect from the cold and the wind.”
IOM is a leading humanitarian actor in Somalia, providing assistance to vulnerable migrants, including internally displaced persons (IDPs) and affected host communities, with health, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), protection and food security-related issues. To enhance humanitarian coordination in Somalia, IOM uses its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) to track and monitor population displacement during crises.
