IOM Distributes Aid to Syrian Nationals Residing in Camps in Turkey
The Turkish Red Crescent, on behalf of IOM, today, Friday 7th
September 2012, carried out a second round of non-food aid
distribution to the Syrian nationals currently residing in eight
tent cities, one temporary reception centre and a container city
established by the Turkish authorities at Gaziantep, Hatay and
Sanliurfa regions.
The aid, which includes 5,000 bed linens, 2,000 mattresses and
5,000 pillows, will be distributed in existing and newly
established camps in the area. Other items include 1,000 kitchen
kits, 15 container showers will also be distributed.
The provision of basic non-food items, NFIs, is extremely
important especially during the initial settlement stages of the
displaced populations, the majority of who arrive in Turkey without

Crisis Situation Report, 04 September 2012
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of
Turkey (AFAD), there are currently in excess of 80,000 Syrians in
camps in South Eastern Turkey and that more than 10,000 Syrians are
waiting at the borders to enter one of the camps in Turkey.
The Turkish authorities say they are finalizing the setting up of
the new camps which will soon accommodate the new arrivals.
In the first NFIs distribution which took place in June this
year, the Turkish Red Crescent distributed IOM-procured NFIs to
vulnerable families in Islahiyi, Ceylanpinar and Gaziantep camps
near the border with Syria. IOM procured the items using
funds provided by the UN’s Central Emergency Relief Fund,
CERF and the US government.
Meanwhile, IOM is continuing to monitor and to track
cross-border movements of third country nationals (TCNs), in close
cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and
Ministry of Interior (MoI) which has authorized IOM to make regular
visits to the South Eastern region to provide support to
TCNs. Turkish Governorates have recently been provided with
technical guidelines prepared by General Directorate of Security on
procedures to follow with any arrival of TCNs.
IOM Turkey has received requests from embassies including
Moldova, Belarus and the Philippines to assist their nationals when
they cross the Syrian border into Turkey. So far, IOM has assisted
few Moldovan families with accommodations and travel arrangements
to their countries and facilitated visas for Chinese nationals.
