IOM Director General Will Open International Immigration Conference in China
Senior officials from over 27 countries will attend an
international conference next week in Shanghai, the People’s
Republic of China, to discuss how to facilitate and manage
migration.
The International Conference on Immigration Inspection and
Service will also encourage the exchange of data between countries,
to enhance their capacity to manage international migration.
IOM Director General William Lacy Swing will provide opening
remarks, following a welcome from H.E. Meng Hongwei, Vice Minister
of China’s Ministry of Public Security.
The two-day conference, which opens on Monday (20/8), will be
hosted by the Bureau of Exit and Entry Administration of the
Ministry of Public Security, and co-sponsored by IOM and the
Immigration Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region.
It will offer a platform for countries to exchange information,
ideas and experiences on migration management from both policy and
practice perspectives. Special sessions will be devoted to the
facilitation and regularization of exits and entries, application
of new technologies and the prevention of irregular migration.
The conference will explore responses to changing patterns in
migration and further strengthen collaboration among countries and
regions in addressing migration-related challenges.
After the conference, Ambassador Swing will make a three-day
visit to Beijing, where he will meet with IOM counterparts,
government representatives and members of the diplomatic
community.
