IOM Delivers Non-Food Relief to Victims of Heavy Rains in Northern Haiti
Haiti - In response to the severe flooding that hit northern Haiti last week, causing five deaths and displacing 6,000 people, IOM, in support of the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC), delivered four truckloads of non-food relief items (NFI) to help affected families in the north and northeast of the country.
The aid included 2,550 hygiene kits, 2,850 cooking kits and 1,000 jerry cans. It was delivered to two Operational Centers for Departmental Emergency (COUD) in Cap Haitian and Fort Liberté. The items are now being distributed by DPC to affected families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the prolonged heavy rains over the course of last week.
During the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season, IOM, in cooperation with DPC, has pre-positioned stocks of NFIs for hurricane response in vulnerable areas including Les Cayes (7,756 items), Gonaïves (5,760), Jacmel (7,223), Jérémie (3,200) and Port-au-Prince (55,519) to support rapid response operations.
IOM has also distributed cholera response and disaster preparedness NFIs to displaced populations in camps and cholera-affected areas.
As of September, there were still over 85,000 vulnerable internally displaced persons (IDPs) in 123 camp sites across Haiti. IOM’s NFI pre-positioning programme is funded by USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA).
