IOM-Backed Film Premieres at Rotterdam Film Festival

A new film by former Oscar nominee Darrell James Roodt and IOM
which takes a rare look at the migration realities faced by
Zimbabweans today is being premiered at the Rotterdam international
film festival.

"Zimbabwe" tracks the life of an orphan named Zimbabwe in her
desperate search for survival for herself and her siblings. Her
journey, which eventually takes her to South Africa as an illegal
migrant and where her life takes an even more harrowing turn, is a
moving account of the dark side of migration.

Director Darrell James Roodt (of Sarafina and the
Oscar-nominated, Yesterday fame), who never fails to touch
audiences with his unique way of telling African stories, said: "It
was the most complete movie-making experience I've ever had."

"Not only is this film visually stunning in its depiction of
rural Zimbabwe, but its exploration of the vulnerability of
migrants to exploitation, which happens all across the world, is
very important," said the co-producer, IOM's Nicola Simmonds.

Zimbabwe is part of IOM's Safe Journey Information Campaign in
Zimbabwe that focuses on the risks and realities of irregular
migration and HIV and AIDS. It is 84 minutes in length and is
screened in Shona and English with English subtitles. It was
produced by Jeremy Nathan of Dv8 Films and Nicola Simmonds with
support from IOM and Britain's Department for International
Development (DFID), the Hubert Bals Fund, International Film
Festival Rotterdam, and the National Film and Video Foundation
(NFVF).

The film is showing at the Rotterdam International Film Festival
until 2 February. Global sales are handled by Dv8 Films.
