IOM assists the voluntary return and reintegration of Chadian migrants from African and European countries, N’Djamena, 12 June 2013
As a member of the Protection Cluster in Chad, IOM continues to address irregular migration through a multi-pronged approach with a view to creating sustainable solutions to irregular migration and reducing the smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons which are rampant in the country as revealed by the results of the IOM studies in the country on:
- human trafficking
- registration and profiling of returnees from Libya, and
- impact of returnees from Libya in 2011-2012.
Protection strategies for returning migrants, especially children and unaccompanied minors are part and parcel of all IOM emergency and reintegration projects in the country. The tracing of family members and reunification is done together with ICRC, UNICEF, CRC, CNARR and the Ministries of Interior and Public Security and Social Affairs, Family and National Solidarity.
Since 2010, IOM Chad in collaboration with the IOM missions in Switzerland, Italy, Malta, Niger, Tunisia, and Egypt has been facilitating the assisted voluntary return and reintegration (AVRR) of Chadian migrants from Europe and African countries back to Chad.
Upon their return home, returnees have chosen different income generating activities, running businesses such as petrol filling stations, grocery stores, electronic shops, taxis, clothing shops, animal farms, and fast food shops, among others.
To date, 81 Chadian migrants have benefitted from the IOM AVRR projects. The last two groups of 5 assisted voluntary returnees came from Italy in May 2013. They have been reintegrated in N’Djamena.
