IOM Appeals for US$ 38 Million to Help Pakistan's Worst Hit Flood Victims
IOM has appealed for USD 38.25 million to help up to half a million
families over the next three months following the worst floods in
Pakistan's history.
As the organization leading the 40 agencies comprising the
Emergency Shelter Cluster in Pakistan, IOM's appeal focuses on the
provision of emergency shelter and household items for families
made homeless by the disaster, which has affected some 14 million
people.
Of the total, USD 21 million will go towards emergency shelter
and essential household items like blankets, kitchen sets and tools
for 60,000 families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Punjab, Sindh,
Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PAK) and Gilgit Baltistan
provinces.

A further USD 750,000 will go towards the coordinating the
Emergency Shelter Cluster and monitoring whether its aid is
reaching the people who need it most.
"Aid agencies and the government rely on the cluster to compile
and collate data including needs assessments, distributions and
procurement pipelines and to identify unmet needs by location,"
says IOM Regional Representative in Islamabad Hassan Abdel Moneim
Mostafa.
In addition, IOM is appealing for USD 4 million to provide a
logistics platform for humanitarian agencies to receive, transport,
warehouse and distribute their shelter materials and essential
household relief items arriving in Pakistan by air.
The floods, which have affected 73 of Pakistan's 125 districts,
have also caused massive damage to the country's infrastructure and
livelihoods. The IOM appeal calls for USD 9 million to set up quick
impact projects, in close cooperation with the National Disaster
Management Agency (NDMA), to repair infrastructure like bridges and
roads and create jobs.
Other IOM interventions will include USD 1.5 million for mobile
health clinics to provide primary health care and referrals for
flood-affected communities, and USD 2 million for mass
communications outreach to keep displaced flood victims informed
about aid operations and how to get help.
All of the proposed interventions are in areas where IOM has
extensive experience in Pakistan. In 2005 it coordinated the
Emergency Shelter Cluster following massive earthquake in the north
of the country, in which 75,000 people died and 3.5 million were
displaced.
