IOM Appeals for Funds to Assist Displaced Families in Pakistan

IOM is appealing for USD 14.7 million to provide urgently needed
relief assistance to families displaced by military operations in
Swat, Dir, Buner and FATA regions of Pakistan.

The IOM appeal, which is part of the joint UN Flash Appeal for
Pakistan, will target projects on healthcare, psychosocial support,
security awareness, shelter and non-food items (NFIs),
infrastructure and rehabilitation support, and awareness raising on
human trafficking in areas affected by recent conflict.

The overall Pakistan Humanitarian Response Plan (PHRP) or UN
Flash Appeal seeks USD 455 million to assist more than two million
persons until the end of this year, and includes projects by 52
NGOs, UN Agencies and Inter-Governmental Organizations, including
IOM, supporting humanitarian work in the country.

“We need donors to come forward and respond with generous
assistance to help displaced families and ensure that this
humanitarian support continues until their return and
rehabilitation to their areas of origin,” says Hassan Abdel
Moneim Mostafa, IOM Regional Representative for West and Central
Asia.

With new funding, IOM will provide temporary and emergency
shelter assistance to 10,000 displaced families currently living
with relatives, in spontaneous settlements or collective centres,
in line with the Emergency Shelter Cluster standards.

With over 1.4 million internally displaced persons (IDPs)
registered from recent fighting, the funding will help IOM provide
quality primary healthcare services to at least 40,000 displaced
persons in host communities of Swabi and communities of origin in
Buner.  This will also help decrease avoidable mortality and
morbidity and contribute to epidemic prevention.

New funding will also allow IOM to provide psychosocial support
for some 120,000 IDPs in camps and host communities.  The
assistance will include early detection, referral and follow-up of
mental health illnesses, and will help decrease stigma related to
mental health ailments.

To support the immediate needs of IDPs, the funding will support
IOM plans to procure tents, blankets, sleeping mats, buckets, jerry
cans and other NFIs for up to 30,000 displaced families, as well as
creating four monitoring teams to oversee distribution of relief
goods and collect and disseminate humanitarian information.
IOM in Pakistan has already initiated procurement of emergency
relief items.  Additional funds are needed to continue this
pipeline for delivery into affected areas.

To support infrastructure rehabilitation and create income
opportunities at places of origin, IOM plans to undertake at least
10 community-level projects to repair public works infrastructure
damaged by the conflict.  The activity will also ensure
employment opportunities for local labourers to return to their
places of origin and support the government's
rehabilitation/reconstruction plans.

Working with relevant government departments, IOM also seeks to
launch an awareness raising campaign for law enforcement to prevent
human trafficking from camps and host communities.
