IOM Appeals for $295.5 million for Iraq Emergency Response

Iraq - IOM is appealing for USD 295.5 million as part of the UN’s USD 2.2 billion Strategic Response Plan (SRP) to provide life-saving assistance to five million vulnerable people in Iraq. The request will cover the period February 2014 through December 2015.

IOM has already received over USD 79 million (27 per cent of requirements) in response to the appeal, leaving a shortfall of some USD 215.5 million.

IOM Iraq Chief of Mission Thomas Lothar Weiss said, “IOM is doing everything we can to help the displaced within our funding constraints. An estimated 1.2 million people are in need of winterization assistance. Additional funds are needed if we are to provide for these massive and immediate needs.”

IOM is proposing ten new projects within five humanitarian clusters: Shelter and Non-food Relief (NFI); Protection; Social Cohesion and Sustainable Livelihoods; Health; and Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM). Project areas include: livelihoods, transportation, primary health care, psychosocial support, and the Displacement Tracking Matrix. Projects will assist displaced people across Iraq.

IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix reports that there are currently over 1.81 million internally displaced people (IDPs) in Iraq. The total IDP figure continues to climb with new displacements.

“Temperatures are already dropping in northern Iraq and most IDPs fled with only the clothing they were wearing. IOM is asking for immediate contributions to assist IDPs with pressing needs for winter,” says Weiss.

Since January 2014 IOM has distributed over 41,000 family NFI kits across Iraq. As a co-lead agency for the Shelter / (NFI) cluster, IOM is gearing up its plans to provide for greater numbers of IDPs. In October IOM began distribution of full winterization NFI kits; 4,150 kits were distributed across 10 governorates within one week.
