IOM and National Women's Institute Work to Protect Migrant Women, Fight Human Trafficking

IOM and the Mexican National Women's Institute (INMUJERES) signed a
cooperation agreement this week to promote the rights of migrant
women and to combat the trafficking of women and girls.

The agreement, which was signed by  INMUJERES president
Rocio Garcia Gaytan and IOM Mexico Chief of Mission Juan Artola in
Mexico City on Tuesday, will allow the two organizations to
implement technical cooperation and assistance programmes, develop
projects for migrant women at national, state and local level,
organize research and studies and exchange experts.

The deal will expand existing cooperation which includes a
counter-trafficking project implemented by INMUJERES and IOM in
cooperation with Mexico's National Migration Institute and the
Inter-American Women's Commission of the Organization of American
States between 2004 and 2006.

The two agencies also work together on the Inter-institutional
Board on Gender and Migration and the Network for Assisting Women
Affected by Migration.

Greater numbers of women are now migrating and women, whose
needs are not identical to those of the total migrant population,
now represent a greater proportion of migrants than ever
before.
