IOM and Government of Paraguay host international criminal investigation seminar to combat human trafficking
Paraguay - A two-day seminar, taking place in Paraguay’s capital Asuncion and ending tomorrow, is bringing together the Attorneys General of Paraguay and Uruguay to discuss the latest developments in criminal investigation to prosecute human traffickers.
IOM Counter Trafficking experts from Colombia, Costa Rica and Ecuador will share their expertise and lessons learned with officials from the State’s Prosecutors Office, the ministries of Interior and Women, Immigration Directorate and the Secretariat of Development for Returnees, as well as civil society organizations.
Paraguayan victims of trafficking are mainly young women with little or no formal education and unable to enter the labor market, lured by recruiters who promise jobs outside the country. Once in Argentina, Bolivia and or Spain, the main countries of destination, they are taken to brothels where they are forced into the sex industry.
Uruguay is also a country of origin for victims of trafficking. The vast majority of Uruguayan victims are women who are trafficked to Argentina, Spain or Italy for sexual exploitation.
The seminar, organized by the State’s Prosecutors Office and IOM, is funded by IOM’s Development Fund and is part of a capacity building program to combat human trafficking.
