IOM and General Secretariat for Iberian-American Countries (SEGIB) Sign Agreement
IOM Director General Brunson McKinley and
the Iberian-American Secretary, Enrique Iglesias, signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen technical
cooperation on migration issues in the Iberian-American
countries.
The IOM/SEGIB MOU will increase technical
cooperation between both organizations on matters such as the
transfer of skills, research on international migration, and
seminars and workshops on labour migration and remittances.
"The signing of this agreement confirms our
close working relationship and will translate into increased
collaboration as we join forces to work with Iberian American
states to better manage migration and uphold the humans rights of
migrants," said McKinley.
IOM is working with SEGIB and other partners
in putting together the Iberian-American Meeting on Migration
scheduled to take place in Madrid, Spain on 18 and 19 July.
The upcoming meeting will focus on
international migration issues discussed by the Iberian-American
Heads of State at the XV Summit held last October in Salamanca,
Spain; creating cooperation mechanisms to discuss migration
concerns amongst countries of origin; transit and destination;
participation of civil society; upholding migrants' rights and on
the positive contribution made by migrants in the host societies
and in the development of their countries of origin.
