IOM and EUPOL Enhance Interview Skills of Afghan Police

IOM this week completed a three-day training course on interview
skills for nine officers of the Identify Checking Unit (IDCU) of
the Criminal Investigation Department of the Afghan Ministry of
Interior (MoI.)

IOM organized the specialized police training at the request
from the Ministry under the Danish-funded Technical Cooperation on
Migration Programme. Two Danish experts from the EU Police Mission
in Afghanistan (EUPOL) served as trainers.

"It was a real pleasure to give training to such experienced
police officers. We learned a lot from them, too," said
Superintendent Villy Vilstrup, EUPOL Training Advisor. "We've
particularly focused on the psychological aspects of talking to
people to be able to read the personality and behaviours from the
body language."

During the training, the participants significantly improved
their capacity to interview witnesses and suspects, using different
interview techniques and behavioural analysis.

IOM assisted the MoI in establishing the IDCU in 2004 and has
been supporting its operations through capacity building activities
such as the provision of necessary equipment and staff training in
various subjects.

The IDCU, manned by 21 trained staff, plays a significant role
in the return process of Afghan nationals residing in third
countries. The main function of the Unit is to verify the identity
and nationality of persons seeking asylum or returning to
Afghanistan.
