IOM and the Economic Commission for Africa Sign Agreement

IOM’s Deputy Director General, Ndioro Ndiaye, and the UN
Under Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic
Commission for Africa (ECA), Abdoulie Janneh, have signed a
cooperation agreement which promotes and facilitates sustainable
collaboration on socio-economic development and harmonized
approaches to migration in Africa.

Signed in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, the agreement is a
successor to one signed in 1982. Areas of cooperation and
consultations include economic, social and development policy;
capacity building; human resources development and policy review;
regional and sub-regional cooperation and integration; gender;
migration and development; data collection, outreach and research;
and information exchange, administrative and technical
cooperation.

At the signing, which took place during the 10th Ordinary
Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, Janneh
stressed the importance of implementing the agreement while Ndiaye
underlined the vital role ECA can play in the debate around African
development and in taking the leading role in putting migration at
the centre of the development agenda on the continent.
