IOM and Asian Development Bank Back National Anti Trafficking Plan
The government of Bangladesh has drafted a National
Anti-Trafficking Strategic Plan of Action with technical assistance
from IOM and financial support from the Asian Development Bank
(ADB).
The plan, which is designed to bring together government, civil
society and development partners in solving the country's acute
human trafficking problem, draws its legal authority from the
Bangladeshi Constitution.
It also provides a policy framework that identifies the roles and
responsibilities of different government departments and agencies
in combating trafficking, together with program goals in the five
areas of prevention, rescue, repatriation, prosecution and
integration.
Trafficking in women and children is widely regarded as a major
social problem in Bangladesh. Anecdotal evidence suggests that
large numbers of women and girls are trafficked for the sex trade
and domestic work. Boys are frequently trafficked to work as
beggars and camel jockeys in the Middle East.
