IOM Aids Vulnerable, Displaced Sudanese Ahead of Rainy Season
Sudan - IOM has this year provided life-saving emergency shelter and non-food relief items (ES/NFIs) to 16,525 vulnerable internally displaced people (IDPs) across three states in Sudan. It plans to reach 65,000 vulnerable IDPs with ongoing ES/NFI aid distributions funded by multiple donors by year-end.
This year has seen IOM ES/NFIs assistance expand by 40 per cent from last year’s total of 7,755 IDPs assisted in South Kordofan, South Darfur and North Darfur. The aid continues to target the most vulnerable and at risk populations, particularly newly displaced people.
IOM uses its Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) methodology to identify populations most in need of the assistance. DTM provides accurate and rapid information to all humanitarian partners in order to ensure that aid can be provided based on accurate information on displacement figures and conditions.
With the wet season fast approaching, it has become a priority to pre-position ES/NFI kits and prepare contingency stocks to minimize the impact of flash flooding on already vulnerable populations. Transport and access often become impossible during the rains.
In central North Darfur, IOM delivered aid to 1,200 IDP households affected by insecurity and conflict. Many people had lost both livestock and household belongings, exposing them to harsh weather conditions and disease. In ZamZam IDP camp, it provided ES/NFI kits to another 900 vulnerable IDPs families.
In eastern South Kordofan, IOM assisted 1,500 extremely vulnerable IDP households across eight displacement sites. In South Darfur’s Kalma IDP camp, it provided emergency shelters to the most vulnerable long-term camp residents, including female-headed households.
With the current rise of displacement, coupled with the arrival of growing number of South Sudanese in Sudan, IOM’s resources to deliver ES/NFI aid to the most vulnerable are reaching breaking point. To date it has relied on funding from the Common Humanitarian Fund (CHF), European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), Government of Canada (DFATD), Government of Japan and Italian Development Cooperation.
