Helping to Strengthen Humanitarian Assistance to Migrants
IOM is for the first time providing training to welfare
officers in Turkey to enhance their understanding of
international migration and to strengthen their ability to deal
with humanitarian needs of migrants in line with the Turkish
framework and international best practices.
The training curriculum, which was developed in cooperation with
national institutions, universities and professionals, aims to
provide up-to-date information on Turkish legal and institutional
frameworks, on good practices at national and international level
and on European approaches to integration.
The eight-day training will initially benefit a group of 25
selected welfare officers who will be exposed to techniques for the
design and delivery of social services to migrants.
The training, which will be extended throughout the country,
also includes migrant community leaders who provide information on
migrants' access to basic services such as employment,
health, education and housing. This will provide
participants with a unique insight into problems and living
conditions of migrants directly from themselves.
The initiative is funded through IOM's 1035 Facility which
provides special support to IOM developing member states and member
states with an economy in transition on developing and implementing
joint government-IOM projects addressing particular areas of
migration management. Since its inception in 2001, the Facility has
supported over 200 projects in various areas of IOM activity and
has benefited over 85 member states.
