Governments of South American Conference on Migration Meet to Discuss Social Inclusion of Migrants

Argentina - At the IX Inter-sessional Meeting of the South American Conference on Migration (CSM), held this week in Brasilia, representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname and Uruguay met to discuss the progress countries have made towards the implementation of the South American Human Development Plan for Migration and the activities undertaken in the context of the commitments assumed from the Cartagena Declaration.

Based on the proposal of the President Pro-Tempore, recently assumed by Peru, countries agreed to address in the upcoming South American Conference on Migration (CSM XIV) the issue of social inclusion of South American migrants, thereby strengthening mechanisms for free movement, residence, respect for human rights, regularization of irregular migrants and promoting the integration of migrants in South American societies.

“This week’s meeting proved to be a new milestone in the path set by countries in pursuit of joint efforts to promote regional integration and inclusion of South American migrants,” said Diego Beltrand, IOM Regional Director for South America.

IOM provided support in its role as Technical Secretariat.  The XIV South American Conference on Migration will be held this year in Lima, Peru, on 16th and 17th October.
