Experts Meet on Migration and the Environment
Experts from governments, international organizations, NGOs and
academia will meet in Bangkok on Thursday and Friday (February
22-23) to take part in an expert seminar on migration and the
environment.
The seminar, organized by IOM and funded by the UN Population
Fund (UNFPA) will discuss the impact of gradual climate change on
migration at a global, regional and national level, the effect of
extreme environmental effects and the impact of migration on the
environment.
Some 35 experts from Asia, Africa, Europe and North America will
take part in the event, which will be held within the framework of
IOM's International Dialogue on Migration.
Climatic and environmental changes, both natural and man-made,
have increasingly visible and concrete impacts on the movement of
people. Rising sea levels, deforestation and dry land degradation,
as well as natural disasters, pose challenges impacting development
and livelihoods, settlement options, food production, health and
many other issues.
"These environmental events and processes have led and will
continue to lead to large-scale displacement of people, both
internally and internationally. In light of growing global concerns
about the movement of people and about environmental change, we now
urgently need to examine the interdependencies and relationships
between the environment and human settlement and mobility," says
Michele Klein Solomon, Director of IOM's Migration Policy, Research
and Communications Department, who will deliver a presentation at
the meeting.
"The seminar will bring together experts from both sides -
migration and environment. Its objective is to begin to bridge the
knowledge gap and shed light on the as yet largely unexplored but
evident nexus between two critical challenges facing mankind," adds
Klein Solomon.
