EU backs IOM Jordan transport for Syrian refugees
Jordan - The European Union (EU) has allocated EUR 8 million to IOM to support the Jordanian authorities and build their capacity to ensure safe and humane onward transportation for Syrian refugees arriving in the country.
IOM and the Jordanian authorities will use the EU funding to ensure the continuity of vital reception and transport services benefitting vulnerable Syrian refugees fleeing the armed conflict in their country and crossing into Jordan, through the direct provision of material assistance along the borders.
IOM will also provide capacity building addressing the needs of Jordanian officials in their humanitarian border tasks.
Before reaching camps in Jordan, many refugees face a long ordeal, arriving exhausted, ill and often traumatized.
The Jordanian border guards have deployed significant resources to ensure that refugees receive initial assistance and safe onward passage with IOM. But the burden of hosting some 575,000 Syrian refugees is putting Jordan under enormous financial strain.
“The EU recognizes Jordan's vital role in providing support to the Syrian refugees and appreciates the continuous efforts deployed to welcome all Syrian refugees on its territory. This new support is part of EUR 229 million in (EU) financial assistance to Jordan over the last two years aimed at mitigating the impact of the crisis on the Kingdom,” said EU Ambassador to Jordan Dr. Joanna Wronecka.
