Emergency Air Evacuation Operation of Chadian Migrants from the Central African Republic (CAR), N'Djamena, 12 January 2014

The exacerbation of the crisis in the Central African Republic (CAR) in December 2013 has caused hundreds of thousands of Chadian migrants to flee for their lives to Chad and to other neighbouring countries such as Cameroon and Congo Brazzaville.

To save the lives of its citizens in CAR, the Government put in place an air bridge and organized road convoys to evacuate them.  Moreover, the Government of Chad has sent several requests to IOM to support its efforts in evacuating its citizens in CAR who wish to voluntarily return to their country of origin, Chad, as of October 2013.

A total of 16,701 migrants have been evacuated from Bangui to N’Djamena by air with 86 flights organized by the Government of Chad (70) and IOM (16).

In addition to the Emergency Air Evacuation Operation, IOM provided all evacuees with post-arrival assistance upon their arrival at the port of entries and in transit sites both in N’Djamena and in southern Chad. Services provided included registration, profiling, Displacement Tracking (DT), the provision of  food and non-food items (NFI), emergency medical care, psychosocial support, and onward transportation to their places of preference and countries of origin in Chad and abroad, as well as sharing of information on the influx in Chad due to the CAR crisis with the international community.
