Dominican Migration in Argentina: IOM Study

Argentina - IOM Argentina and the Argentine Commission for Refugees and Migrants (CAREF) have launched a new study: “Dominican Migration in Argentina. Pathways in the New Century (2000-2015).”

The publication follows an earlier joint research paper published in 2003: “Migration, Prostitution and Trafficking of Dominican Women in Argentina.” The study raised the profile of human trafficking in Argentina and contributed to the adoption in 2008 of the Argentine Law to Prevent and Punish Trafficking in Persons and Assist its Victims.

According to the report, conditions have improved for estimated 18,000 to 27,000 Dominican migrants currently living in Argentina. They are working in more diverse work environments; have an enhanced knowledge of job opportunities; and enjoy strengthened kinship and friendship networks.

But while an estimated 8,900 Dominicans have managed to regularize their status as a result of a special regularization programme launched in 2013, in addition to 6,700 holding permanent residency, the remainder remain irregular migrants.
