Director General Attends ISESCO Meeting
IOM Director General Brunson McKinley is taking part in the 9th
General Conference of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization, ISESCO.
The three-day meeting, which opens today at ISESCO headquarters in
Rabat, brings together ministers of education, higher education and
scientific research from the 51 Member States ISESCO as well as
representatives of Arab, Islamic and international organizations.
During his visit, McKinley will meet the Director General of
ISESCO, Dr. Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri and other participants to
discuss a variety of issues relating to migration, the movement of
people and the environment in the Islamic world.
IOM signed a cooperation agreement with ISESCO in December 2003,
which has resulted in closer cooperation between the two
organizations.
In December 3005, with the support of ISESCO, IOM and the Ministry
in charge of the Moroccan Community Residing Abroad organised an
international conference on the theme “Migration and Religion
in a Globalized World”.
IOM membership from Muslim States continues to grow as is the
number of NGOs from the Islamic world, which hold IOM Observer
status.
ISESCO was created in 1981 by the Third Islamic Summit Conference
to promote cooperation between Islamic states in the fields of
education, science, culture and communication.
