Canada Funds IOM Storm Relief in Southern Philippines

IOM has received an additional CAD$202,500 (USD 202,000) from the
Canadian International Development Agency/International
Humanitarian Assistance (CIDA/IHA) to help families displaced by
Tropical Storm Washi (locally known as Sendong) in the southern
Philippines.

The new funds will help IOM to provide shelter aid, cash for
work programmes and non-food relief item kits to more families in
Cagayan de Oro and Iligan – the two worst hit cities, where
thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed by deadly floods
triggered by the storm on December 16th 2011.

CIDA/IHA earlier provided CAD $175,000 to support IOM’s
activities targeting families living in emergency and makeshift
shelters, as well as those trying to return to their homes. Other
donors contributing to IOM’s emergency response include the
UN (CERF), the EU (ECHO) and USAID.

According to the government, nearly 400,000 people were affected
by Washi / Sending – over half of them in Cagayan de Oro City
and nearly 25 per cent of them in Iligan City. Nearly 20,000
displaced people are still living in emergency shelters in both
cities and nearly 50,000 others are living in the community.

Through its multi-donor programme, IOM has now distributed
shelter repair kits to 1,800 families and completed the
construction of bunkhouses for 170 families in Lumbia, Cagayan de
Oro. The first batch of families are scheduled to move into the
bunkhouses February 18th.

The construction of the temporary bunkhouses also provided
short-term, cash-for-work employment to at least 300 people. IOM is
constructing a total of 46 bunkhouses to house 230 families.

In addition, IOM is coordinating with other humanitarian actors
to establish a food-for-work programme in evacuation centres in
Cagayan de Oro, including Calaanan Covered Court, Iponan
Multi-Purpose, Macanhan and West City Central School.

The fresh funds coincide with the launch of the Second Emergency
Revision of the Humanitarian Action Plan for the Philippines. The
plan aims to provide shelter, camp management support, non-food
items, water, sanitation facilities, hygiene promotion, medical and
psycho-social services, as well as education, nutrition and
protection interventions for people still living in Mindanao
displacement camps.
