Assisting Peru and Ecuador to Regularize Migrants in the Northern Border Region
IOM will provide information and training to border officials on
agreements reached by the governments of Peru and Ecuador to reduce
irregular migration through the regularization of migrant workers
in the northern border region.
The IOM project to strengthen the knowledge of some 240 border
guards and other officials from both countries dealing with
migration issues in the border areas will help to provide better
service to migrants there.
There will also be an information campaign with flyers and radio
spots to inform migrants in the border region on how to regularize
their migration status.
The campaign's message will reach cities and towns along the
Wider Border Integration Region (Región de
Integración Fronteriza Ampliada). It is expected that
in the first year the campaign's message will assist some 5,000
irregular migrants from Peru who work in Ecuador and a large number
of Ecuadorians who also work in an irregular manner in Peru, to
regularize their status.
The Permanent Migratory Statute (Estatuto Migratorio Permanente)
was signed by Ecuador and Peru to regularize irregular migrants
from both countries who work and reside in the 1,500 km border
area.
The project is funded by IOM's 1035 Facility, which provides
special support to IOM Developing Member States and Member States
with Economy in Transition for the development and implementation
of joint government-IOM projects to address particular areas of
migration management. Since its inception in 2001, the
Facility has supported over 200 projects in various areas of IOM
activity and has benefited over 85 Member States.
