Argentina Hosts 31st Annual IOM Inter-American Course on International Migration

Participants from 12 Latin American and Caribbean countries arrived
this week in the Argentina resort city of Mar del Plata to begin 11
days of intensive training focused on regional and international
migration trends and to exchange information and best practices on
migration policy and programmes in the Western Hemisphere.

The understanding of migration processes in Latin America and
the Caribbean, migration management, the international protection
of migrants; migration management instruments; policies and
programmes on international migration, such as those concerning
labour migration, assistance to migrants, and counter-trafficking;
and the regional and consultative processes on migration, are some
of the thematic modules to be analyzed by the participants at this
year's course.

For 26 years, IOM was a co-organizer of the course as part of
its technical cooperation activities in the region.  For the
past five years the IOM Regional Office in Buenos Aires has been
the sole organizer.

In 1999, the course adopted an intensive training system within
a shorter time frame, allowing for the participation of senior
government officials.

Over the past 30 years, the Inter-American Course on
International Migration Course has trained more than 650 government
officials.
