Another Mission to Evacuate Stranded Migrants in Misrata is Underway
An eighth IOM mission to Misrata to evacuate a remaining group of
stranded migrants began today Tuesday, 31 May.
A few hundred migrants are estimated to be still in need of
evacuation assistance from the city in addition to a group of
civilian war wounded.
The 2 to 3 day mission, funded by the US State Department's
Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, is
carrying humanitarian aid into the Libyan port city. Between
500-700 MT of aid, including food from the UN’s World Food
Programme, are being transported on the IOM-chartered ship.
Non-food items include blankets and family kitchen sets from
UNHCR as well as medical supplies such as vaccines from UNICEF
and WHO.

Also on board are a joint IOM-UN assessment team aimed at
gauging humanitarian needs in Misrata which has seen much of the
fighting.
The Misrata mission follows the arrival back in Libya of IOM
international staff in Tripoli as part of a UN team. The presence
will help facilitate additional help to migrants stranded inside
Libya and to provide humanitarian assistance.
