Ambassadors Visit Jordan’s Northern Border with Syria, Refugee Entry Point
Jordan - On Monday (2/2), under the auspices of the UN Resident Coordinator, IOM led a delegation of senior diplomats from 27 Amman embassies to Jordan’s northern border with Syria.
The high-level visit allowed Ambassadors and Heads of United Nations agencies to get a sense of the reality faced by the Jordanian authorities and their international humanitarian partners working to assist refugees crossing from Syria into Jordan.
The diplomats also witnessed the work of the Jordanian Border Guards, who, since the start of the crisis in 2011, have been helping refugees to enter Jordan in extremely challenging conditions.
Funded by the European Union, UK, USA, UAE, Kuwait, Japan and others, IOM Jordan has been working with the Border Guards since the onset of the crisis.
It has provided them with transport to move the refugees from the points where they enter the Kingdom to three camps and has provided border management training to build the Border Guards’ capacity to cope with the refugee influx.
Davide Terzi, Chief of IOM’s Mission to Jordan, said: “It is important for members of the diplomatic and humanitarian community to witness what is happening on the ground. This visit has helped them to appreciate the hardships faced by refugees and the continuous efforts made by the Jordanian government and its humanitarian partners in addressing this ongoing crisis.”
“The work of IOM, the UN and the Jordanian Border Guards to provide humanitarian assistance to these desperate people has been made possible by the ongoing support that we have received from the donor community. We hope that this will continue for as long as the Syrian conflict continues to force people across the border in search of safety,” he added.
