Agreement Establishes African Migration Capacity Building Centre in Tanzania
IOM Director General William Lacy Swing and Tanzanian Minister for
Home Affairs Lawrence K. Masha, are signing a cooperation agreement
today, 2 October, on the setting up of an African Capacity Building
Centre in northern Tanzanian town of Moshi.
The IOM centre aims to promote sound migration governance in
Africa; develop, institutionalize and deliver on-site and off-site
migration management training programmes and build the migration
management capacity of African States.
It will provide assistance to African States requesting
technical expertise in key migration areas such as border
management, labour migration, migration policy, legislative,
administrative and operational reform.
The centre will also analyze and identify the training needs and
priorities of African States and engage in research initiatives and
networking in an effort to provide reliable, timely and up-to-date
information on migration issues affecting the continent.
The centre will be funded by IOM with voluntary contributions by
governments, international organizations and other sources.
