The International Organization for Migration supports evidence-based policies, programming and communication through the improvement of international migration data. Established in Berlin in 2015 at the invitation of the Government of Germany, the Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC) was set up as part of IOM’s wider response to calls for better international migration data and analysis. It is a global centre that is part of IOM’s International Cooperation & Partnerships (ICP) division at IOM Headquarters in Geneva. GMDAC works with various parts of IOM on migration data initiatives and supports the Organization at global, regional and country level to improve migration data, in line with IOM’s Migration Data Strategy.
GMDAC objectives include:
- Strengthening the global evidence on migration
- Developing the capacities of states and other key stakeholders
- Supporting evidence-based programs, policies and communications
Additionally, GMDAC has two cross-cutting themes that support all three objectives. These are (1) championing migration data for global frameworks and (2) encouraging data innovation.
GMDAC currently has over 20 staff, who are based in Berlin and IOM’s Regional Offices.
