Togo, situated as a pivotal hub for migration within the West Africa region, has witnessed a steady rise in both emigration and transit migration over the years. Since its establishment in 2012, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) office in Lomé, Togo, has maintained a close collaboration with the Togolese Government and various stakeholders to address the complex challenges and opportunities presented by these dynamic migratory trends.
In 2024, IOM Togo is focused on several key priorities:
- Continuing cooperation with the Government to combat trafficking in persons and associated practices. This involves providing direct assistance to victims and enhancing the capacities of relevant national authorities to identify and address the needs of vulnerable migrants. Special attention will be given to tackling labor and sexual exploitation.
- Mitigating conflicts and preventing violent extremism in border areas through targeted activities. These include conducting assessments of border regions, fostering dialogue and cooperation among communities, traditional leaders, and local authorities, inter-religious dialogue, and cross-border cooperation.
- Supporting the Government's endeavors to engage its diaspora in national development initiatives. Collaborating closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, and Togolese Abroad, IOM will assist in implementing action plans aimed at involving Togolese diaspora members in the country's development efforts.
- Supporting Government efforts towards modernizing borders and their integrated management and regional cooperation by enhancing human capacities through tailored training for border security agents.
These efforts are geared towards promoting sustainable development, safeguarding migrants' rights, and ensuring that migration processes yield mutual benefits for both Togo and the migrants involved. Through strategic partnerships and tailored interventions, IOM Togo is committed to enhance the well-being of migrants and facilitate effective migration management in the region.
