The Kingdom of Sweden joined IOM as a Member State on 27 November 1990.
Since 2011 the IOM Country Office in Finland has been in charge of activities and operations in Finland, Sweden and Iceland. In Sweden, IOM's activities include Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration for victims of trafficking, economic reintegration assistance for voluntary returnees, and the resettlement of refugees to Sweden.
Sweden is also a donor to IOM, with a focus on the sectors of humanitarian aid, governance, democracy human rights, and gender equality.
