As the world convenes in Baku, Azerbaijan, between 11 and 22 November 2024 for the 29th Conference of the Parties to UNFCCC (COP29), the International Organization for Migration is calling for common ambition and concrete actions to address climate change and its impacts on migration.
Climate migration is a reality. Last year alone, more than 26 million internal displacements due to disasters were recorded (IDMC GRID 2024). At COP29, we need to discuss solutions to address climate displacement while also advocating for migration as part of the solution to climate change.
At COP29, IOM is committed to amplifying underrepresented voices. On the IOM Climate Change and Human Mobility pavilion, all attendees will have the opportunity to hear stories of resilience from climate migrants, learn about youth-led solutions on climate migration from the 24 Youth Delegates on Climate Migration, and engage in discussions with experts on the impacts of climate change on human mobility.
IOM reaffirms its commitment to continue implementing solutions that protect and empower those affected by climate change. We must act now!
