- What is the typical selection process?

Recruitment can take from one to two months (excluding notice period). The recruitment procedure includes:
- Publication of vacancy (2 weeks)
- Screening of applicants; exam administration, if applicable
- Interviewing shortlisted applicants
- Reference Check
- Selection recommendation
- Approval of selection recommendation

- Will IOM inform me about the status of my application?

- If I have a relative working at IOM, can I also work for IOM?

The recruitment of "close relatives" (father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, step-father, step-mother, step-son, step-daughter, step-brother and step-sister) of IOM personnel to work for IOM will be prohibited, in any IOM office worldwide, regardless of the type or duration of the contract. This will also apply to affiliate personnel. Recruitment of "other relatives" (aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandparents, grandchildren) and spouses will continue to be permissible, subject to certain conditions and control measures being put in place.
Candidates applying for vacancies/positions will be required to declare whether they have relatives already working for IOM.
- What are the different type of contracts in IOM?

Vacancy announcements are published for positions minimum of three (3) months to one (1)year. IOM recruits under two types of contracts: (i) Fixed-term contracts for one year and (ii) Special contracts, with a short period of employment from three (3) to nine (9) months.
- What are Job Categories?

Recruitment takes place in the following categories:
- General Service: This category includes local qualified staff with the skills and ability to provide support service to the Organization and its professional staff. In this category, recruitment may take place at G-1 to G-7 levels. IOM follows the job classification of the United Nations Common General Service Standard for Geneva-based Organizations.

Consultant: A consultant is an expert or specialist who possesses skills of knowledge not normally found within the Organization engaged by IOM under a temporary contract. The functions of a consultant are results-oriented and normally involve analyzing problems, directing seminars and training courses, preparing documents for conferences and meetings and writing reports on matters within their expertise.

OJT/Intern: The IOM Internship Programme targets young, talented undergraduate and graduate students, willing to gain practical experience in a field relevant to the Organization through their full involvement in daily working activities in migration-related areas and/or in public international administration.

National Officer: This category are normally locally recruited and perform functions at the professional level. The qualifications for National Officers are the same as for the Professional category from NO-A to NO-D levels based on the job classification of the United Nations Common General Service Standard for Geneva-based Organizations.
