Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals Reach 341,055; Deaths at Sea: 4,271
Switzerland - IOM reports that 341,055 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 13 November, arriving mostly in Greece and Italy.
Some 170,553 people have arrived in Greece and 164,868 in Italy so far in 2016. The total is well below the number of arrivals at this point last year, when 728,926 migrants and refugees had made the journey.
No new deaths have been recorded since IOM’s last update on Friday 11 November, when an estimated 4,271 people had been reported missing or dead after trying to make the crossing in 2016. This is 749 more migrant deaths than the 3,522 recorded during the same period in 2015.
According to the Italian Ministry of Interior, the 164,868 migrants who have arrived in Italy by sea this year represent an almost 16 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, IOM Greece reports that 79 arrivals were registered on 11-12 November on the islands of Lesvos, Samos and Chios.
