IOM Launches Online Platform to Track Europe’s Migration Emergency

Switzerland - As part of its overall response to Europe’s migration emergency, IOM has developed an online platform to display and evaluate the complex migration flows from Africa and the Middle East to Europe.

The multi-layered platform at http://migration.iom.int/europe displays data on a number of critical components necessary to understanding the scale, scope and patterns of current migration dynamics in Europe.

With the aim of connecting the dots in new and innovative ways, the continuously updated platform highlights trends across key locations with interactive maps, helping create a better visual understanding of the unfolding situation.

The platform includes several key features, among them a review of data on newly arrived migrants and humanitarian needs in migrants’ countries of origin, maps of the land, air and sea routes most frequently travelled by those undertaking the journey to Europe from Africa, and a global map of displacement, including information on the size of internally displaced and refugee populations by country, drivers of displacement and the size of migration flows from African countries to Europe.

More than 593,000 migrants, including refugees, seeking asylum have travelled to Europe so far in 2015.

IOM has intervened at every stage of the migration emergency, providing direct assistance to save lives of those making the perilous journey to Europe, expanding data collection efforts to better guide assistance and raise public awareness of the emergency’s human toll, and bolstering humanitarian assistance programs in countries of origin and transit.

In the longer term, IOM continues to advocate for increased resettlement support by its member states, support of campaigns to address xenophobia and inclusive reception of migrants, as well as advocacy on issues ranging from the inclusion of development actors in migration planning and well-planned integration efforts in destination countries.
