IOM Appeals for US$ 254 Million for 2016 Syria Operations
Switzerland - The Syria inter-agency appeal, including the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) and the Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan (3RP), was launched this week in Geneva as part of the overall 2016 Humanitarian Appeal.
This year the international community is requesting US$ 8 billion to cover the needs of 13.5 million people inside Syria, as well as 4.7 million Syrian refugees and 4 million members of impacted host communities in Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. Under both the Syria HRP and the 3RP, IOM is appealing to the international community for US$ 254,332,199.
“Our strategy for Syria is twofold: to continue to respond in a timely way to new displacements through strategic pre-positioning at the borders and inside Syria, while also enhancing our livelihood programmes to restore and create coping mechanisms for people affected by the crisis,” said IOM Director of Operations and Emergencies Mohammed Abdiker.
Almost five years into the armed conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic, the situation continues to deteriorate. Some 13.5 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance inside Syria, including 6.5 million internally displaced people (IDPs). Nearly 5 million people are living in hard to reach and/or besieged areas.
Despite a very challenging situation on the ground, IOM has reached over 1.5 million conflict-affected individuals inside Syria in 2015 with essential non-food items (NFIs) and shelter assistance; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and health services; and livelihood support from its hubs in Damascus (Syria), Amman (Jordan) and Gaziantep (Turkey). This included over 260,000 people living in hard to reach and besieged areas.
In 2016, IOM’s operations inside Syria will target 4 million people with essential humanitarian interventions in the sectors of shelter, NFIs, camp coordination and camp management, WASH, health and protection. In addition, IOM will increase its food security, early recovery, livelihood and education programming as part of its newly endorsed resilience strategy.
IOM will also continue to provide coordination and logistic services to humanitarian partners engaged in the Syria response, through needs and population monitoring, the provision of free-of-charge surface transportation from Jordan, and the management of emergency stocks in its warehouse in Gaziantep.
In 2015, IOM operations in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt provided assistance through shelter and basic needs activities, livelihood support, protection, health, and facilitation of transport to over 600,000 individuals.
In 2016, IOM is appealing for US$ 149.7 million for Syria, US$ 45.1 million for Lebanon, US$ 28.1 million for Turkey, US$ 20.4 million for Iraq, US$ 7.5 million for Jordan and US$ 3.6 million for Egypt.
Projects will focus on social stability, livelihood support, provision of shelter and non-food items, protection, health, and education, aiming to reach almost 1.6 million refugees and members of host communities in the region.
