The New Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Office for the Central African Region (UNOCA) visits Chad from 16 to 19 June 2014

The New Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Office for the Central African Region (UNOCA), Professor Abdoulaye Bathily visited Chad from 16 to 19 June 2014.

The objective of his visit was to familiarize himself with the current situation in the country as the newly appointed SRSG/Head of UNOCA. He was accompanied by his Special Assistant, the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Political Affairs Section of UNOCA, and the Officer of the UN Department of Political Affairs (DPA).

During his visit, the SRSG/Head of UNOCA met separately and jointly with high-ranking government authorities including H.E. M. Idriss Deby Itno, the President of Chad, and members of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT).

IOM was one of the UNCT agencies that the new SRSG/Head UNOCA and his team met separately. They met with the IOM Chief of Mission in the IOM office in N’Djamena on 16 June. The main objective of their meeting was to discuss the situation of the more than 100,000 Chadian migrants, CAR claiming nationals and other Third Country Nationals (TCNs) who have recently fled the Central African Republic (CAR) crisis and who have entered Chad either by air or road with the assistance of the Government of Chad and IOM.

During his stay the new SRSG/head of UNOCA also visited the temporary site in Gaoui in N’Djamena that is hosting some of the Chadian migrants, CAR claiming nationals and other TCNs from CAR. He was accompanied by IOM as one of the agencies providing humanitarian assistance, i.e., emergency medical and psychosocial services to evacuees from its clinic located in the temporary site. They met with the temporary site management team and evacuees.
