Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals Reach 340,778; Deaths at Sea: 4,271
Switzerland - IOM reports that 340,778 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through 9 November, arriving mostly in Greece and Italy.
Some 170,322 people have arrived in Greece and 164,822 in Italy during 2016. The total is well below the number of arrivals at this point last year, when 728,926 migrants and refugees had made the journey.
An estimated record 4,271 people have died trying to make the crossing in 2016 – 773 more than the 3,498 at this point in 2015.
According to most up-to-date Italian Ministry of Interior figures, the 164,822 migrants who have arrived in Italy by sea this year represent a 15 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Since IOM’s last update on Tuesday, a total of 833 migrants have been rescued.
Meanwhile, IOM Greece reports that 148 arrivals were registered on 7 November on the islands of Lesvos, Kos, Leros, Samos, Chios and Megisti.
